The Myth of the "Donna Selvatica"

The history of the Romano and Lidia Levi family

Levi Serafino married Teresina Balbo and moved to Neive around 1920, drawn by the quality of the local pomace. In 1924, he founded the direct-fire distillery. Upon his death in 1937, his wife Teresina continued the business until 1945, when she died during a bombing raid on Neive. Their children, Lidia and Romano, were thus left on their own; Romano, then seventeen and a student in Alba, left his studies to devote himself to the distillery, to which he remained tied for his entire life until his passing in 2008.

Visit the Distillery

Today, the Distillery is a tourist destination in Neive, visited by thousands of people interested in Romano's workplace and the traditional distillation process. Thanks to an agreement with the municipality, it remains a living museum that preserves its original spirit. The "Donna Selvatica" (Wild Woman) has become a symbol of the town, which has dedicated a small museum to Romano. Located in the Langhe, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 2014, the Distillery was recognized in 2018 as the first "Place of memory and local traditions."
