The "Donna Selvatica"
The "Donna Selvatica" (Wild Woman), in the peasant tradition of the Langhe, embodies ancient knowledge linked to nature, seasonal trades, and folk wisdom. A figure also present in Alpine sagas, she represents a free and instinctive femininity, deeply rooted in the land.
For Romano Levi, she was linked to visions and childhood memories: beautiful and disheveled women, strong and passionate, suspended between reality and magic. In his mind, she had a precise identity, yet one that remained a mystery. The protagonist of the labels he began drawing in 1962-63, the "Wild Woman who climbs over the hills" has become an icon of the Langhe and the symbol of his poetic universe.
Art Brut
Romano Levi’s art lives on in his hand-painted labels: small tales of wild women, hills, and thoughts, linked to Art Brut for their spontaneous expression, free from academic conventions. Sought after by collectors and displayed in restaurants and hotels around the world, they safeguard their creator's sensitivity and imagination.
The Distillery preserves over 500 original labels purchased by Luigi Veronelli, an expert in wines and spirits and a friend of Romano, and employs a group of people to certify their authenticity on the market. The labels on the bottles today are artistic reproductions of this heritage, which keeps alive the bond between the grappa and the world of its creator.
